Rotation/ scale invariant hybrid digital/optical correlator system for automatic target recognition

چکیده
Optical correlator systems due to their inherent parallel processing capabilities have the potential of processing large data bank to enable rapid identification of targets within an input signal. Purely optical correlation systems are not practical for real time applications. In this paper, we discuss and implement the hybrid correlator system. In this system, the input scene is Fourier transformed digitally and is multiplied with the presynthesized digital filter. The product displayed on a spatial light modulator is optically Fourier transformed to obtain correlation peaks.

Hybrid Photonic Correlator for Automatic Target Recognition Applications
Optical correlation technologies due to its parallel processing capability and high speed have found promising application in automated military target identification, seeker guidance and machine vision, etc. For Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) and missile guidance applications, the targets are often present with aspect view angle variations and its size (range) also changes as the sensor ap...
متن کاملIncorporation of polar Mellin transform in a hybrid optoelectronic correlator for scale and rotation invariant target recognition.
In this paper, we show that our proposed hybrid optoelectronic correlator (HOC), which correlates images using spatial light modulators (SLMs), detectors, and field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), is capable of detecting objects in a scale and rotation invariant manner, along with the shift invariance feature, by incorporating polar Mellin transform (PMT). For realistic images, we cut out a s...
متن کاملComplex data mapping on a binary ferroelectric liquid crystal electrically addressed spatial light modulator for target recognition
For displaying a complex valued function onto a binary amplitude-only or phase-only spatial light modulator, an encoding technique is required. In this paper, we implement an encoding scheme proposed by Davis et al. [Appl Opt, 42 (2003) 2003] for optical processing the complex product function in the hybrid digital-optical correlator. The output of this correlator consists of two autocorrelatio...

John T. Shen, MEMBER SPIE Northwestern University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Evanston, Illinois 60208 Abstract. For practical pattern recognition and tracking systems, it is often useful to have a high-speed random access memory (RAM) that complements a holographic correlator. Recently, we have demonstrated a super-parallel holographic correlator, which uniquely identifie...
متن کاملShip Recognition Using Optical Imagery for Harbor Surveillance
Many military and homeland defense missions require automated situation awareness in maritime environments. A major element of these missions is automatic detection, tracking, and recognition of ships as they transit harbors. We advocate the use of optical sensors in an Automated Target Recognition (ATR) system to accomplish these missions. This paper reports on the development of maritime opti...
